Unless you are lucky enough not to need one, the primary living expense for most homeowners is their mortgage. It will often represent a large part of the value of their home and they will spend a large period of their working lives repaying it! So every now and then it makes sense to check that you have a "good deal" and that you're not paying more than you need to.
Many providers are now adjusting their remortgages weekly, so it pays to stay well informed and, if you need to remortgage your existing home loan, start shopping around early.
Unfortunately in the UK currently the tide is against you staying in that "good deal" situation and if you neglect your mortgage chances are the "good deal" you signed up for is no longer "good" and could in fact be pretty poor. It's a competitive market out their and mortgage lenders are always trying to attract new customers, often at the expense of their existing ones - we've all seen the TV adverts referring to "New customers only" - so the only way to stay on top of the game is to become one of those new customers yourself by remortgaging on a regular basis.
There have been some fairly major changes to mortgages in the UK recently and specifically in how people selling mortgages (brokers)are compensated. What this has meant is that the additional charges made when a remortgage is put in place now have more of an impact and need to be considered carefully. Companies are not always likely to cover the cost of legal fees and surveys as readily as they once used to. Don't let this put you off though, it still makes sense to keep a close eye on what your mortgage is costing and whether it is a good time to switch to a different lender.
